An air raid shelter recently found under the grounds of Stocksbridge High has been filled, after building authorities claimed it to be "dangerous".
The air raid shelter, which workers believe to be one of two underneath the school, was found as builders were working on the demolition of "D Block". Authorities claimed that the shelter would have proven unsafe for the rebuilding of "D Block", as the foundations would have been too weak.
Staff and students were "captivated" by the finding and the school headmistress, Jan Featherstone, said, "We're disappointed the shelter was filled. It was nice to lay claim to such a piece of history and we would have liked more time with it. But we understand why it needed filling. It's just a shame".
It is suspected to have been built during the continuous air raids on Sheffield during the second world war.
This is one of many air raid shelters found in the Sheffield area, with other shelters being found under Longley Primary School, Lound Junior School, Western Road School & Hatfield House Lane to name a few. All found and filled in the last 40 years.
Stocksbridge High's receptionist, Mrs Carole Simpson, said "I'm glad we got the pictures and gave the students a chance to experience something historical. It was a nice find, but it's a pity they had to be filled so quickly".
